Beautiful Weather
Unveiling the majesty of our planet through real-time videos of current weather systems
What we are about
In our chaotic 21st century lives, it is easy to lose sight of the grandeur around us. For many of us, the sun has risen by the time we get out of bed. We scurry off to work, and focus on our phones and ourselves. The rains may come and the rains may go. Soon the sun is setting and we prepare to repeat it all over again the next day. Beautiful Weather seeks to slow us down. To relax us. To reflect on the insignificance of our daily activities, and focus us on the grandeur of the giant complex world around us.
How it works
Far out in space (like way out there), U.S. Government weather satellites snap pictures of our world every 10 minutes. A half hour later those images become available to us, the people. Beautiful Weather takes those pictures and through a series of processes turns them into a curated video, updated every hour, for you to enjoy.
Connect with us
You can find us on Roku, Vimeo, Facebook, and more. We'd also like to connect with you and hear your thoughts on the videos. We are just starting on this journey. It began as an "after the kids go to bed" project, and we have no idea where it is going to lead. We have ideas but want to hear from you as well.
We live on a beautiful, complex and powerful planet.
Through all of history past, only the generations alive in the past 50 years have had the opportunity to view the whole of Earth from space. Through this view we have an opportunity to see the beauty, power and complexity of our planet in a way that none have before. Given this, it is ironic that our generation seems to be getting more disconnected from nature and growing more insular all the time. Beautiful Weather seeks to pull peoples gaze upward and outward to the amazing beauty and complexity of this world we call home.
Creating beauty from a public good
For over 50 years, the U.S. Government has been launching people and satellites into space. The quality of the images returned by the satellites simply keeps improving. Beautiful Weather is built upon the data from one of these modern marvels. At 22,000 miles in space, NOAA's lonely GOES 16 East satellite stands watch over the Western Hemisphere. Every ten minutes, it snaps a picture and sends it back to earth. This imagery, provided by the people of the United States, for the people of the United States, is made available thirty minutes later. Beautiful Weather captures these images, and processes them into frames for a video (8,000+ frames for a six-minute video). We then add in some weather data (thank you National Weather Service!), and throw in some music. Every hour an updated video is ready to be shared with you for your encouragement and enjoyment!
Hopefully we are just getting started...
